Summary:  Object Oriented programming has become the standard in IT programming throughout the world.  A subset of OOP can provide our PLC world with most of the benefits of OOP, without the typical complexity and reduction in reliability.  CODESYS supports most of this OOP subset, with a few noticeable exceptions:

  1. Alarms
  2. Persistent Variables
  3. Parameters and Configurations
  4. Recipes
  5. Logging/Trending
  6. Input/Output

Exceptions 1 through 4 are addressed with the ControlSphere Object Oriented Alarming Library (OOA), and the ControlSphere Parameter and Persistence Library (CPP) – eliminating the post-process work and list maintenance required in the older PLC programming techniques.  This Tech Talk will address exception 6 and show how I/O modules are just another plant object (like a proximity switch or a pump) and how complexity is significantly reduced when all objects are treated consistently.   This Tech Talk will go on to demonstrate a system where the object (Function Block) specifies the type of I/O and Engineering units it needs, and the I/O objects then satisfy those requirements in a single configuration/mapping file.  It will also show how this technique provides the ability to modify the I/O mapping during runtime, and how I/O can be added or modified without the need to shut down the plant or equipment.
